Personality: Genji is a man who’s been through a lot - and he’s had to accept the fact that he’s been through a hell of a lot of things. He went from being the easygoing, laidback black sheep of the Shimada family, to a man made weapon who detested what he had become, to someone who could accept who he was and what had happened to it and see hope for the future. It took a while to get there, but it’s very much evident by the way he acts.
He’s flippant about his past - his past is simply something he lived through, and he doesn’t see a reason to hold on to his anger over it. He holds no ill will towards his brother, despite what Hanzo did to him. He accepts and ultimately forgives his brother’s actions, and wishes for the best for him. He’s found peace and he wants to share that with someone who’s troubled by the past, despite the horrendous things they’ve done. He’s not upset over what happened to him, either at the Shimada’s hands or Overwatch’s, because it is a simple fact of his life. He doesn’t have nearly the amount of emotional turmoil over being more machine than man in a world where robots have to fight for the right to be seen as people you would expect. It took him years to accept this part of himself, but the Genji now is completely unphased by that. He’s a cyborg, yes, but that does not make him less of a man. It just makes him himself. He’s a whole person, not just bits and pieces of one, and he accepts that. In short, he’s pretty fucking zen about everything.
He even has a dorky sense of humor. He can make light of his situation and life, and crack jokes about it. He’s also more than a little blunt and sarcastic - he can see the humor in any situation he finds himself in. He doesn’t take things all that seriously. His sense of humor was one of the first things that came back to him after being reconstructed by Overwatch - he had been angry for a time, yes, but in time he was able to make jokes and jabs and be someone who could laugh again. That’s only become more obvious with time and understanding of himself. He went from anger to being able to make fun of himself for being a cyborg ninja dude. This is largely thanks to the guidance of Zenyatta and the rest of the Shambali.
Despite spending much of his time with monks, Genji is not particularly spiritual, but he is exceptionally kind. He believes in forgiveness. He reached out to his brother, and forgave him, and he tends to treat people with that same respect and capacity for compassion. He might have come from a family of assassins and crooks and he might have taken part in some nefarious things in Blackwatch - but now he is a man who can see the good in everyone. Even the people who don’t think there’s any good left in them. A person is more than their actions, and Genji knows and accepts this. He’s spent too long full of rage and anger to want to go back to that, which means he forgives and forgets and wants to help others. He wants to pay back what’s been done for him.
All in all, Genji is someone who has made great strides to move on from his past. He’s got a fondness for life and living, and he can look back at painful things with happiness. There’s a sentimentality to what he does, and he cares deeply for those around him. He’s found inner peace, and he wants to share that with the world. He wants to be a force for good, and he wants to reach out to those who are at a crossroads in their lives.
Abilities: •Mechanical modifications - Genji is largely synthetic, leaving him more durable than a standard human.
•Agility - Genji was agile and in excellent shape as a human, and he’s even more so as a cyborg. He can jump higher and farther than most humans, can scale near-vertical surfaces, and also double jump. Because reasons. He’s also faster than most standard humans, and has excellent reaction times. He is actually capable of deflecting bullets and other such projectiles, such as arrows.
•Dragons - The Shimada family has a bond with dragons. It’s unclear what exactly the dragons are, but they have incredible destructive power. Genji can call upon the dragons to imbue himself with extra strength and speed, and to bless his weaponry with their power to destroy his enemies. Canon does not get more clear than that, so the dragon’s destructive ability can probably be nerfed entirely, while leaving them summonable.
•Swordsmanship - Genji is a trained swordsman, and has a lot of combat experience. He can fight real good.
